Pistons Fire Curry.

I was hoping for this. The Pistons and Micheal Curry have parted ways. So does this leave the door open for Bill Laimbeer to get his shot at coaching the team he helped win back to back championships?

In Currys defense, it didn't help that the pistons made one of the worst trades in NBA history, by literally giving Chauncy Billups away for nothing.  The man who goes by the answer was more like a riddle. Actually more like a joke.

Can't wait to see who the Pistons bring in.....how about Avery Johnson?

The Pistons and AI never got off on the right foot.

Paved Paradise And Put Up.......WHAT??

Well I guess now its official. Tiger Stadium is no more.  The council to save  Tiger Stadium did everything they need to do to save it and it was still rejected by the City council. Why? I guess we will never really know.

The plans the Save Tiger Stadium committee  had for the park were nothing short of awesome. Please click on the link to see them.........

The following article is from THE SAVE TIGER STADIUM WORDPRESS BLOG:

We are shocked at the recent demolition of Tiger Stadium. It dishonors the hundreds of thousands of dollars raised by the Conservancy, the State of Michigan changes to the historic tax credit laws to enhance this project, the federal appropriation granted by the U.S. Congress and signed by President Obama, and the thousands of volunteer hours contributed by the Conservancy, its consultants and its supporters in advancing this effort. We believe – and the DEGC has said they agree – that we had made substantial progress toward our redevelopment goal with a strong likelihood of ultimate success in the worst economy in decades. Then out of the blue, we received notice that the DEGC was tearing the stadium down. In answer to misleading statements made to the press and the City Council by the DEGC, we offer the following:

NO EXTENSIONS GIVEN:
The OTSC received no extension of any deadline from the DEGC from the date the city agreed to spare the Navin Field portion of Tiger Stadium in 2008. Prior to that time, extensions were only received following intervention of the City Council. The DEGC never granted any extension of its own accord.

SUBSTANTIAL CASH RAISED:
The OTSC raised more than $600,000 in cash from more than 700 contributors – individuals and entities – and secured the $3.8 million federal appropriation in the past nine months.

TAX CREDITS AVAILABLE:
Experts in tax credits and historic preservation commissioned by the OTSC identified tax credits totaling more than $18 million for which the project was likely eligible. The OTSC made substantial progress in the complicated process to secure these tax credits. Potential buyers for the tax credits had been identified and the sale of the tax credits would have provided $18 million of cash for the project. This is exactly the same financing structure that was used for other projects in the city, including the Book Cadillac Hotel development, so it was not an unfamiliar process to the DEGC.

ESCROW ESTABLISHED:
The OTSC deposited $300,000 in escrow with the DEGC to secure demolition costs and the purchase price of the stadium.

SECURITY / MAINTENANCE – 100% PAID BY CONSERVANCY:
The OTSC paid $93,000 for security and maintenance for the period through June 30, 2009 and was able to pay additional sums required in the future for security and maintenance costs at the Stadium.

DEMOLITION COSTS – RED HERRING:
The “increased demolition costs” cited by the DEGC as a reason for immediate demolition were a function of the current low steel prices, which will likely turn around with the economy and produce lower demolition costs again in the future.

BEST USE OF DEMOLITION FUNDS?
Demolition now will cost our financially stressed city $250,000 more than the funds deposited in escrow by the OTSC. Is this the highest priority of the city to spend taxpayer’s dollars on demolition at this time?

NO MEETING NOTICE / DEFECTIVE MEETING:
We had no notice from the DEGC of any meetings of the City Council or the Economic Development Corporation where the fate of the project was considered. In particular, we had no notice of the EDC meeting of June 2, 2009, which was conducted out of public view, and our first notice of the meeting and the demolition decision was from the press. At that meeting, the EDC members received no explanation of the OTSC’s substantial progress to assist its board in making an informed decision. Moreover, though required under the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU), the EDC Board did not make the determinations and findings required to terminate the MOU and authorize the demolition of the stadium, nor did the Board ratify the action taken unilaterally by the DEGC (in the name of the EDC) when it notified the OTSC a day earlier that the MOU was being terminated.

CURRENT M.O.U <1 YEAR OLD:
We had been working under the current MOU with the DEGC for less than one year, not since 1999, when the Tigers left for Comerica Park, as DEGC representatives have stated publicly. The OTSC was only incorporated in May, 2007, and the current board has only been in place for the last year.

T.R.O. VIOLATED:
We were able to obtain a temporary restraining order on Friday, June 5, 2009 at 5 p.m. in an attempt to avoid significant damage to the stadium. At about the time the TRO was granted, the demolition resumed and later intensified until a supporter jumped the fence and gave the TRO order to the demolition operator at about 6:30 p.m. The demolition seemed to be intended to cause the most damage to disparate parts of the stadium in the shortest time. The demolition sacrifices in excess of $12 million of historic tax-credits to the city.

NO D.E.G.C. SUPPORT OR COOPERATION:
The DEGC provided us no technical, financial or organizational support whatever in our redevelopment efforts, and no other encouragement of any kind. For example, recently, the OTSC’s request to the DEGC for access to the field for press and fundraising purposes was denied.

NEIGHBORHOOD SUPPORT:
Though the DEGC has made public statements that neighborhood residents were supportive of demolition, in fact the Corktown neighborhood, the neighborhood that surrounds the stadium, was strongly in support of the efforts of the OTSC. The neighborhood’s own community development organization has two members on the OTSC board, and many residents of the neighborhood contributed both their money and time.

REMAINING STRUCTURE A VIABLE HISTORIC BUILDING:
Despite repeated characterizations by the DEGC and media of the remaining portions of Tiger Stadium as a “stub” or “remnant,” the structure the city is currently demolishing was a viable, historic major league ballpark, circa 1930. It was not an incomplete or unusable remainder.

NO PLANS FOR THE SITE:
Before the demolition began, DEGC intimated that they were in talks with outside developers – developers interested in a cleared and vacant site. Since demolition has begun, the DEGC has acknowledged that there are indeed no serious development proposals for this site.

Not only the city, but the state and the entire country have lost the opportunity to redevelop an historic treasure that would have anchored a significant enhancement of the near west side of Detroit and spurred much-needed economic development in the years ahead. Instead, we will have an empty field at the corner of Michigan and Trumbull to further blight the landscape of our city. This historic “corner” will have a new meaning.

We thank our many supporters for their steadfast support and encouragement, as well as their time, money and passion for this project. You gave us the strength to carry this effort forward and we regret that the DEGC, the EDC and the city did not provide us the continued opportunity to achieve this objective.

The recent actions of the city, the EDC and the DEGC raise questions about the city’s priority regarding demolition and the use of the city’s funds. Why the urgency to spend hundreds of thousands of dollars of city money to demolish at this time? Why is the DEGC so quick to demolish the Navin Field portion of Tiger Stadium when there are thousands of vacant and abandoned structures throughout the city that are in need of immediate demolition and are clearly a danger to Detroit’s citizens and firefighters? What are the plans for the site that require immediate demolition? The political leaders of our city need to address these issues and take charge of setting the development priorities of the city.

Senator Levin has informed us that the Conservancy remains entitled to utilize the $3.8 million Federal appropriation that the U.S. Congress so generously provided for economic development in or near the stadium site. In conjunction with the southwest Detroit community, we will determine how the money might best be invested and leveraged to have some good come of Senator Levin’s steadfast effort and support. We hope the city will assist us with these efforts for the good of the city and its citizens.

The failure of the DEGC to support the Conservancy is a tragic loss of a unique opportunity for economic development in the City of Detroit. The larger question the people of Detroit and the entire region should ask is why the DEGC is allowed to heavy handedly run roughshod over the efforts of the not-for-profit and preservation communities and the thousands of citizens who are supporters of development efforts. The DEGC should be encouraging and assisting these efforts rather than quashing them at every turn.

Bernie Madoff.....Modern Hitler/Conman

Posted by Joe | Labels: , , , , | Posted On Monday, June 29, 2009 at 9:50 AM

I'm not really a big believer in the death penalty, unless of course your crime is so heinous that you should die. Like Child molesters, Serial killers, you know people who INTEND to hurt and have no remorse  for their actions.

Like Bernie Madoff.

He is the modern version of Adolf  Hitler. To some that may sound a little absurd, but its not if you really think about it. He didn't physically kill anyone, but he did ruin MANY, MANY lives.

Adolf Hitler's rise to power began in September 1919 when Hitler joined the political party that was known as the Deutsche Arbeiterpartei. His goals were set in stone, I think we all know that. No need for history 101.

So were Madoff's. He knew what he was doing from day one. He played with people's lives and had no remorse.  A friendly face, trusting, and kind, then he bled you for all you had. I have watched several shows on TV of the people he stole from, elderly couples, widows, left with nothing. NOTHING.

He financially crippled thousands of people, who in there golden years should just be worried about where they are going to vacation for a week, not wonder where there next meal is coming from. So he gets 150 years behind bars. Does that really fit this crime? Life in jail for ruing thousands of lives?

I guess I have to give him some credit, in a demented way he was actually a very smart man. But all criminals get caught. Usually because they get greedy.

Well I know I'm not the judge and jury, but soon you will have to answer to the real one Bernie.

Brandon Inge Class Act On And Off Field

Posted by Joe | Labels: , , , , , | Posted On Sunday, June 28, 2009 at 10:00 AM

Tommy Schomaker is 8 years old and has faced more adversity than many of us face in a lifetime.

Tommy is recovering from a heart transplant surgery at Childrens Hospital in Ann Arbor Michigan, and  if you happened to be watching the telecast of the Tigers/Cubs game Tuesday night,  you might have saw that  Brandon Inge was sporting a new tattoo on his right forearm. It was from Tommy.

Inge, who regularly visits and donates to the hospital, had made a trip there a few weeks ago, and Tommy was excited about the possibility of meeting him. Tommy has battled heart conditions since birth, luckily doctors were able to find a new heart for him.

Tommy was in surgery when Inge was making his visit, so Inge was unable to see him.

Upon hearing of Tommy's disappointment, Inge made a return trip to the hospital to meet Tommy. He spent time with him, signing  autographs and talking with the young boy.

Then Inge asked if he could have an autograph of his own.  Tommy signed his name on Inge's arm,  in a place so everyone at the game, and everyone watching on T.V. could see. What a great thing to do.

And as fate would have it, Inge hit a go-ahead two-run homer in the seventh inning.

A first class act by a first class guy. He's also a pretty good ball player.

Sometimes nice guys finish first.

First Donte Stallworth Now Chris Brown.....It Just Gets more Ridiculous

Posted by Joe | Labels: , , , , , | Posted On Wednesday, June 24, 2009 at 1:28 AM

It just blows my mind. It shouldn't, but it does. Do these judges who come up with these bullshit slap on the wrists sentences for these people in the "limelight" even know what they are doing?

Are they even qualified to be judges? If these judges had kids, or a friend or relative this happened to would they pass out these monopoly "Get out of jail free cards" so easily?

Chris Brown beats on Rihanna like shes a punching bag, makes the world famous "plea deal" and basically walks away.

Like I already said in other blogs, It DOESN"T MATTER if you are Black, White, Chinese, Greek......etc....

Money Talks, and in this case it's a JOKE.  There are no plea deals for you and me. The common man, or woman, pays a hefty fine and does time.

Advocates fear Brown's plea deal, which gave him five years' probation and community labor, is so cushy that it sends the wrong message to young men and victims. I can't say I blame them. We try to teach our kids from day one to be respectful, nice,  and help your neighbor.

They are also particularly troubled about the impact of the sentence on the many middle and high school students who look up to Brown and Rihanna. Again, Can you blame them?

To me all this verdict says is if you get upset with your girlfriend you have a free pass to hit her......why not, Chris Brown did and he didn't get in trouble.

Instead of making an example out of  Brown, and saying  "We don't care if you are rich and famous, you are not above the law." They say just the opposite.

What a terrible message to send to our youth.

Donte Stallworth Verdict A JOKE, But It's Just Another In A Long List

Posted by Joe | Labels: , , , , , , , | Posted On Tuesday, June 16, 2009 at 9:36 AM

This is sick. It's crazy. It's so bad adjectives will never do it justice.  It just proves more and more that this is a racist country.  What race you ask?  Not black, white, mexican, chinese...........green, the color of money. If you have lots, anything is possible. ANYTHING. It controls EVERY race. Unfortunatly.

Picture this. You get the worst phone call of your life, your spouce, Mother, Father, sibling, friend....etc, was in an accident and killed by a drunk driver.  Numbing.

Then oh by the way, the killer gets 30 days in the hole.

30 days!!??!!  That's the same penalty I almost got for trying to sell my extra Tiger tickets in front of Comerica Park!!

Just ask friends and family of Mario Reyes, the real person who suffered, not Donte Stallworth.  Blood tests revealed Stallworth had a blood alcohol level of .126 after the March 14 crash that killed  Reyes, who was 59.

Stallworths lawyers said he was sorry and remorseful. Wow, that's nice to know. I wonder if this happened to me or you if we could say the same and get 30 days behind bars.

Yet the sick thing is this happens alot, and it seems like if you are an athlete or someone well off, you walk away with a slap on the wrist.

Former Lions player Reggie Rogers did the same thing.

More than 20 years ago, Rogers wound up in prison after being found guilty of negligent homicide. In that case, three teenagers were killed when Rogers ran a stop sign and collided with their car in October 1988.

Rogers, who had been the Detroit Lions' first-round pick, was dropped by the team when he went to prison. After a year behind bars, the Buffalo Bills picked him up but then dropped him after playing him in only two games.  He has had SEVERAL DUI's since!!  SEVERAL.

After a drunken birthday in 1998, NFL star Leonard Little crashed into and killed another motorist.  His blood alcohol level measured 0.19 percent. Little received 60 days and 1000 hours of community service. Six years later, after the involuntary manslaughter conviction was wiped from his record, Little was again arrested for drunk driving.

Maybe he signed some autographs and gave away some tickets. That always reduces a jail sentence.

What kind of message does this send to people? Especially kids. Athletes ARE roll models, whether they like it or not. Millions of kids live and die for there favorite teams and players.

The penalty for this crime is a joke, and it sends a terrible message to everyone, kids and adults. The average 9 to 5 guy would never get 30 days. Maybe 30 years.

Verlander Dominates Again

Posted by Joe | Labels: , , , , , | Posted On Thursday, June 11, 2009 at 4:20 AM

The Detroit Tigers haven't faired well against the Chicago White Sox in recent years. Neither has Justin Verlander. Both of those things seem to be changing.

The Tigers have takin 3 out of 4 so far in this 5 game series in Chicago, and tonight Justin Verlander was lights out.

Verlander (7-2) earned his 7th win by pitching a complete game six hitter, striking out 9, in a 2-1 Tigers win. Verlander is on fire!!!....No he is ON FIRE!!!!  Verlander is 7-0 since starting 0-2 and his E.R.A. is a whopping 1.10. A throwback kinda guy who likes to pitch the whole game. I love it!

Throwing at nearly 100 mph right through his 122nd and final pitch  Verlander was so good for so long that the White Sox couldn't believe what they had witnessed. The final strike looked like somethin you see on Playstation or X-Box. Windem up and let em go!! 99 MPH on the Radar.

Just like Mclain, Lolich,  Morris,.....and the other greats before him, Verlander is on his way to being the dominate pitcher of this decade.

Justin Verlander twirls a complete game and is 7-0 since April 27 with a league-best 1.10 ERA. (AP)

Justin Verlander has the competition looking over their shoulder when he's on the mound!

Home Cookin Everything In Stanley Cup

Posted by Joe | Labels: , , , , , , , | Posted On Saturday, June 6, 2009 at 8:45 AM

The Red Wings dominate the first 2 games at home, go up 2-0 in the best of 7 Stanley Cup!!!  It's over!!!  Were gonna sweep!!!!   Woooohoooo!!!!

Pittsburgh dominates games 3 and 4.....series tied at 2 games each......PANIC TIME!!!! What happened??? They are to old.....too slow!!! ALL HAIL CROSBY!!!

Sorry, that was just my impression of the national and local media. Mostly the local media, especially the yahoos who get their own radio shows....most who probally couldn't play a sport or run a mile without stopping 5 times.

They Are BOTH GREAT TEAMS!!!! Thats why they are here for the second straight year!!!  But in my humble and always correct opinion, the winner tonight, the all important game 5, will win the Cup.

And of course it will be the Red Wings.

Once Again The City Of Detroit Gets It Wrong

Posted by Joe | Labels: , , , , , , , , , | Posted On Tuesday, June 2, 2009 at 6:13 AM

What's wrong with Detroit?  One of the Oldest and most historic cities in America just can't get things right. And as a Detroiter, it pisses me off!

What remains of historic Tiger Stadium will be demolished after the city rejected a $33.4 million proposal by a nonprofit group to preserve and renovate the old ballpark. WHY???

Most people would say who cares. It's old. Knock it down. Get over it.

But sometimes holding on to the past, can lead to a brighter future. Tiger Stadium is a historical monument. To fix up what left could actually be a spring board for the corner of Michigan and Trumbull.

It's a great area that just needs new life breathed into in.

Classic Bar's like Nemo's and Hoots, which are blocks away from the ol ball park, still come to life during baseball season. (And especially on St.Patricks day)

Slows BBQ retaurant is a new joint right next to old Tiger Stadium. (The food is great!)

Why can't we keep the ball park?  Grow the area around Corktown like they did only 2 miles east of the stadium by building the new MGM Grand Hotel and Casino.

Make it so people would actually want to walk the streets,  there are TONS of buildings on Michigan Ave that need to be, and should've been, knocked down way before Tiger Stadium was.

How cool it would be to take your kids and future generations downtown and show them where yesterday lived.  Greenberg, Kell, Kaline, Ted Williams, Mickey Mantle, all played right on that grass. And now when a non-profit group who wants to hold on to this sacred baseball past comes up with the money, it's still shot down by the detroit commission.

To see a strip mall or any other building on that corner of Michigan and Trumbull, after all it's history and all the efforts made by donations and non-profit fund raising, would actually be a sin.

I know I will miss you Tiger Stadium.

Yankee fans are doing the same thing right now, trying to keep up and preserve Gate 2 at the original Yankee Stadium.

Thank You Orlando

Posted by Joe | Labels: , , , , , , | Posted On Monday, June 1, 2009 at 6:28 AM

First off, I'm not a front runner. You know one of those guys who all the sudden loves the team that came out of nowhere and says "I liked them all the time!!"

That's not me. But right now I do love the Orlando Magic. Did I think they would beat Cleveland? No. Not because of lack of talent, because of No. 23, and the Refs. that's all.

Seriously. I think the refs have fallen in love with James.  So has David Stern. Those commercials with the puppet LeBron and Kobe were so dumb. I saw Dwight (the real MVP) Howard on ESPN say he thought those commercials were disrespectful to the Magic. Like it just was a formality that they would beat the Magic and face the Lakers.

Can you blame Howard for feeling that way? Maybe they should've waited til AFTER the Cavs actually made the Finals to start running those commercials.

How about James walking right off the court after they got crushed in game six?  He said he was angry and didn't want to stick around? Why is the media not all over him for this? If the Magic blew the 3 games to 1 lead, got run off the court in game 7 in Cleveland, and Dwight Howard walked right off the court, you can bet he would be called a baby, immature, and host of other things.

Let's be honest. The Cavs stink. Yes they suck. If they returned the same roster next year, minus LeBron, they would be lucky to make the playoffs.....they might even be a lottery team.

So unlike everyone else who keeps reporting and asking "What happened to the Cavs?"

I say great job Orlando. You deserve it. Now really turn the NBA  upside down and go win the NBA Championship!
